Does the Captain realize that I have not loaded the old gun yet? Does
he realize that the eleventh bullet is was for him? Each person has
a shooting alley to prevent mistakes. It a tunnel made of brick, with
a hole to fire through.
I fire the eleventh bullet into the side of the tunnel intentionally.
It makes a beautiful sound. KAPPACHINOOOooo! The others all laugh at
this. I spend the rest of the shooting practice shooting at all the
other guys targets. Two of them score 11 bulls out of 10. I get the
lowest score and am not required at shooting 'practice' again. Its true,
I did fear the firing squad, but the memory of wanting to shoot the
Captain is a deeper scar than the bullet wound on my forehead.
The next week its Physical Training again. I'm not sure, but it looks
like Captain Tait is drooling at the prospect of hitting the last guy.
John Wilson is next to me, but he is taking his time to get dressed.
I say 'you had better hurry John, he's drooling at your backside'. He
looks at me and says 'I don't care, I'll take as long as I need.' So
I reply 'well then me too!'
The others all scurry out in a half-dressed hurry, tying the neck-tie-nooses
on the way out. John and I are last by a mile. We walk towards the door,
and one of us says 'After you'. So the other replies 'No, after you'.
'No, after you John. 'No-no, after you Jon.' The Captain looks confused.
We keep it up for a while, now we are later than ever. Eventually Captain
Tait is the one to give in, he turns and walks away. |
